Making the Most of the Offseason: 7 Things to Do Now for a Successful Year

Summer has a way of flying by. Before schedules fill up and the first practices begin, take a little time to plan ahead. The strongest school programs and sports teams aren't built in August—they're built during the quiet weeks of summer.

Whether you're a coach, athletic director, parent volunteer or team leader, here are seven things worth checking off before the first whistle blows or the bell rings.

1. Build Your Core Team

Identify the people who will help make the year successful. Think about who will own communication, fundraising, events, photography, spirit wear and team traditions. If there are gaps, summer is the perfect time to recruit new volunteers before everyone gets busy.

2. Put the Entire Year on the Calendar

The earlier you plan, the more options you'll have. Schedule important dates like parent meetings, fundraisers, picture day, Senior Night, banquets and spirit wear sales. Booking venues, photographers and other partners is much easier months in advance.

3. Set Your Fundraising Goals

Start with the end in mind. Decide how much you need to raise and, more importantly, what those funds will support, whether it's new equipment, scholarships, travel, facility improvements or team experiences. Having a clear purpose makes fundraising more meaningful.

4. Strengthen Your Traditions

Every great program has traditions people look forward to. Review the ones that have become favorites, retire those that no longer fit and think about one fresh tradition you could introduce this year.

5. Welcome New Families

Remember what it felt like to be new. A simple welcome email, season calendar, volunteer opportunities and key contacts can help families feel connected before the season even begins.

6. Refresh Your Brand and Communication

Take a fresh look at how your organization presents itself. Update your website, social media, email lists and calendars. Make sure your logos, colors and messaging are consistent so families always know where to find accurate information and your organization is always presented in the best possible light.

7. Define Success Beyond the Scoreboard

Winning is exciting, but it's only part of a successful season. Think about how you'll recruit and recognize sponsors, thank volunteers and celebrate the people who make your program possible. Set goals for school spirit, community involvement and creating an experience athletes and families will remember long after the season ends.

Final Thoughts

The best seasons are rarely the result of last-minute planning. Investing a little time this summer will help create a more organized, less stressful and more memorable year for everyone involved.
